MESSAGE .................NHW RU Distraction Burglary in Hillmorton area of Rugby INC 376 of 22 June
A distraction burglar targeted a 97 year old man at his home in the Hillmorton area of Rugby on Friday afternoon (22 June).
The man was at home when a male called at his door around 12.30pm and claimed he had been working on the drains at a house across the road. He told the householder that he needed to check the water supply to his home and asked the man to turn the taps on in the kitchen.
The man left the elderly man alone and went upstairs for a short while. After he had gone it was discovered that a tidy search of the three bedrooms upstairs had been carried out and a chisel had been used to force open a locked drawer in a unit.
It is not known yet whether anything was stolen in the burglary.
The man is described as being white male, aged approximately 40 - 50 years, 5ft 8inches tall, of medium build with short brown hair. He word a blue tunic style top and trousers, but did not show any identification when he came to the door.
Police remind elderly or vulnerable neighbours not to let anyone they do not know or are not expecting into their homes, without first checking their identification, even if the caller says that it is an emergency. Please also watch over neighbouring homes and report anything out of the ordinary to police..
