MESSAGE .................NHW RU Police advice relating to the recent increase in thefts of flatscreen and plasma TVs in Rugby burglaries
Following a recent increase in the number of burglaries in Rugby where flatscreen TV's were stolen Rugby police are offering the following advice to reduce your chances of becoming a victim of a burglary.
Are you thinking of buying a flatscreen TV to treat your family for Christmas? Would you still like to watching it on Christmas Day? If so please be aware of the following points:
When purchasing the TV in a shop be aware of who may be listening to your name and address details and the date of delivery.
Once home please consider where you site the TV in your house. Avoid putting it in view of a window and if this is the only option consider the use of blinds or nets to screen it from view from the road. Remember just by walking down a street burglars can see the TV's on display in homes and know who to target.
Rugby Tip is shut at the moment which may be one of the reasons why households who have purchased new TV's are being identified and targetted. Please ensure that all packaging is disposed of or recycled discreetly and as soon as possible. Make sure that you remove all traces of a delivery address from the packaging before disposal. As the Rugby recycling centre is closed you should be prepared to find an alertative solution.
Consider marking your property with solutions such as Smartwater and placing stickers indicating this in your windows. By marking property it reduces the value of the stolen item and, if police recover the property, it can be proved to be stolen and often re-united with its owner.
If you have recently purchased a flat screen TV and would like Smartwater please contact the Community Safety Unit at Rugby police station.
Finally, please make the best use of your eyes and ears to help police catch these thieves. Remain on the alert and on the lookout for suspicious persons, vehicles or activity in your locality and make sure that anything of concern is reported to police immediately. Thankyou.
